Frequently Asked Questions
01
Which areas of my body are touched during Havening?
A certified Havening practitioner will touch the palms of your hands, the tops of your arms and two areas on your face: the forehead and cheeks. It has been demonstrated under laboratory conditions that these specific areas create low-frequency delta waves in the brain. This, in turn, stimulates a neurochemical process thought to de-potentiate the neural pathway created when we experience a traumatic event.
02
Does Havening work if we are not face-to-face?
Havening can be carried out very effectively online if this works better for you. You would apply the Havening touch yourself; alternatively, someone at home could apply the touch under the guidance of a certified Havening practitioner during an online session.
03
Is there an alternative if I am not comfortable with touch?
If you would prefer, you can apply the Havening touch yourself while we guide you through the session, or you can bring a support person to do this if you feel more comfortable.
04
How much information do I need to share with you?
This is completely up to you. It is helpful if you are able to share what is causing you to feel distressed, but it is not necessary to relive every moment of a challenging experience/traumatic event.
05
Will you share my information with anyone?
No. Our service is completely confidential. We are health professionals, and confidentiality is core to our practise.
06
What should I wear for my Havening appointment? Do I need to remove my clothes?
You stay fully clothed throughout the Havening session. Wear whatever clothes you feel comfortable in.
07
Will I be consciously aware throughout the Havening session?
Yes absolutely. We will be talking throughout the session, and you will be fully aware and in control.
08
Will Havening remove things from my memory?
You will still remember an event, however the goal of havening is to remove the emotional distress associated with the memory. Some people report feeling emotionally disconnected/removed from a traumatic memory following Havening. Others say that the moment in their lives appears differently when they try and visualise it afterwards.
09
Am I able to bring someone with me to my Havening session?
Yes of course, you are very welcome to bring whoever you would like with you. Bringing small children without extra support can sometimes be challenging as it’s hard to relax and focus on your own needs. However, we can definitely work around a newborn who needs you.
10
Is Havening safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
There is no evidence to suggest that Havening poses a risk to your pregnancy or lactation.
11
How many sessions am I likely to need?
The number of sessions is client-led. Many people feel a difference after only one or two sessions. People who have more complex trauma may require more – it is completely up to you and how you are feeling. We take things one session at a time and there is no obligation to book more than your required sessions.
